Abegweit First Nation

Abegweit First Nation is a forward-thinking Mi’kmaq community with three reserves in Scotchfort, Morell and Rocky Point on Epekwitk (Prince Edward Island). We designed and developed a new website that brings the Nation’s programs, business opportunities, events and stories together in one place.

Abegweit’s website serves many audiences at once: community members looking for programs and services, partners exploring business opportunities, and visitors coming for festivals and events. We organized a wide range of departments, from Health & Wellness and Education to Fisheries & Natural Resources, into a clear structure, wrapped in bold red branding and photography that celebrates Mi’kmaw culture, all in a site that’s easy for staff to keep up to date.

A searchable Business Directory showcases the enterprises and organizations that power the community, from the Epekwitk Gas Bar to the Abegweit Connects Business Centre and the Nation’s fisheries. Visitors can browse by category, search by keyword and sort results, with list and map views to help them find their way.

The Festivals & Events calendar keeps everyone up to date on community gatherings, from Mawiomi to the Chief’s Haunted Barn, a fundraiser for the local food bank. Visitors can browse upcoming events by list, month or day, search by keyword, see all the details on each event’s page and add events to their own calendars.

Abegweit’s story is best told in its own voice. The Media Centre brings together the Nation’s docuseries, news coverage and photo gallery, with each episode embedded right on the site. Episode 1, below, shows community development in action.

Transparency is one of the Nation’s core values, so we gave it a home on the site. Annual reports and consolidated financial statements are published year by year, alongside the Comprehensive Community Plan, the Master Land Use Plan and the Community Land Use Plan, all a click away for community members and partners.

Programs & Services brings eight departments, from Administration & Finance to Sport & Recreation, together in one simple tabbed layout. Like the rest of the site, it’s built for phones first, so members can find a program, check an upcoming event or browse the directory wherever they are.
