Websites for First Nations & Indigenous Organizations

Websites and branding for First Nations, Indigenous organizations and Indigenous-led businesses

Lake Design has worked alongside First Nations and Indigenous organizations, including Abegweit First Nation, the Mi'kmaq Confederacy of PEI and Indigenous PEI, with a new website for the PEI Office of the Regional Chief launching soon. We also build for businesses that work with Indigenous communities, like Arcwell Developments, which builds modular homes with Indigenous communities across Canada. Each website is built around the community it serves: members looking for programs and services, partners looking for opportunities and visitors wanting to learn and connect.

There is no template for an Indigenous website. We listen first, follow your guidance on language, imagery and protocols, and build accessible, mobile-friendly websites your staff can update with confidence.

    Our Clients

    FAQs

We offer industry experience, down-to-earth & authentic feedback and conversations, and a passion for all things design & web.

Have you worked with First Nations and Indigenous organizations before?

Yes. Our work includes websites for Abegweit First Nation, the Mi'kmaq Confederacy of PEI and Indigenous PEI, and a new website for the PEI Office of the Regional Chief is launching soon. We've also built websites for businesses that work with Indigenous communities, like Arcwell Developments.

How do you handle cultural content, language and imagery?

We take our direction from you. Your team decides which stories, language, imagery and knowledge are shared, how they're presented and who approves them, and nothing goes live without your sign-off.

Can the website include Mi'kmaq or other Indigenous languages?

Yes. We can build your website to include Indigenous languages alongside English and French, using translations provided or approved by your community.

Can you add a business directory, events calendar or document library?

Yes. We've built business directories, events calendars and resource libraries for annual reports, financial statements and community plans, so information is easy for members to find and easy for staff to update.

How long does it take to build a website?

Timelines depend on the size & specs of the website project, but here are some general guidelines...

Shopify projects usually take around 4-8 weeks.
WordPress projects usually take a minimum of 6-8 weeks.
Logo Design usually takes a minimum of 3 weeks.

Who owns the website and content?

You do. Your website, content, photos and domain belong to your Nation or organization, and we make sure you have full access and control.

Do you work with organizations outside PEI?

Yes. We work with clients across Canada, using Zoom, Slack and Asana to keep communication clear throughout your project.

Do you offer support after launch?

We do. We offer optional hosting, maintenance and support plans, and we provide training so your team can manage day-to-day updates.
